There are a couple of different stories of how the first Father’s Day began that span over two or three generations. According to some people, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Washington state in 1910. A woman named Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea of honoring fathers while listening to a sermon on Mother’s Day the year before.
Her father was William Smart, a veteran of the Civil War who raised his six children on a small farm in Washington after losing his wife during childbirth. Sonora initially suggested June 5, the anniversary of her father’s death, to be the designated day to celebrate Father’s Day; however, the date was deferred to the third Sunday in June by local government officials.

The other story of the first Father’s Day in America was in Fairmont, West Virginia, in 1908. Grace Clayton had an idea to hold church services to celebrate fathers after a local mine explosion killed over three hundred men.
In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended that Fathers Day become a national holiday 1924. Lyndon B. Johnson, through an executive order, designated the third Sunday in June as the official day to celebrate Father’s Day in 1966. In 1972, during the Nixon administration, Father’s Day officially became a national holiday in the U.S. and traditional celebrations grew larger along with the holiday industry.
