California has the number one largest cannabis market in the United States. It has fully legalized adult-use, recreational and medical marijuana. They have a large number of dispensaries, totaling around 1500 statewide.  


Nevada legalized recreational marijuana in 2017. They had already legalized it for medical purposes back in 2001.  Adult-use restrictions are similar to nationwide alcohol restrictions in that you have to be 21 to purchase, and it’s illegal to drive while influenced.

Colorado was able to legalize cannabis for medicinal purposes in 2000, then revised the law in 2012 to legalize it recreationally. In 2020, Colorado cannabis sales across the medical and adult-use markets were over $2 billion. 


Massachusetts legalized the use of up to a 60-day supply of marijuana for patients possessing a state-issued registration card in 2013. They also eliminated criminal penalties for cannabis possession.

Illinois legalized medical marijuana in 2014.  Then, in 2019, the governor signed The Illinois Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, fully legalizing it for adult use over 21 years old.

Oregon legalized cannabis for use with a medical marijuana card in 1998 and later for adult use in 2014 through the Adult and Medical Use of Cannabis Act.
