Searching for Where to Buy Weed Online?

You're not alone. Over the last 12 months Google Trends report a rise in the number of searches for 'buy weed' in the Chicago area. In fact, there are more than 25 searches made for where to buy weed in Chicago on a daily basis, with about a 100 people searching on a good day. This shows the potential demand there is for the growth of the cannabis industry in Chicago.

'Where to buy weed near me' seems to be the most prevalent search term. Further to this, people are beginning to ask for weed delivery in Chicago. Could such a thing be possible? Could you order weed online and have it delivered to your door? You can in other states, and it may be possible depending on the laws in Illinois as well.

Can You Order Weed Online?

If you qualify for a medical marijuana card then you can already pre-order weed online, and pick it up at a dispensary near you or have it delivered if you qualify. Illinois law states that you can have weed deliveries made in Illinois as long as you are taking cannabis for medicinal use.  Ordering weed online for recreational use is illegal in Chicago. You can examine what the law says exactly by visiting the Chicago Sun Times.

If you live in another state where you are legally allowed to buy weed online for recreational use, then weed delivery is a booming business. With country-wide legal cannabis sales expected to top the $57bn mark by 2027; online weed delivery in Chicago is poised to expand rapidly. Online ordering and delivery of weed doesn't just benefit the consumer by providing convenience, it also boosts the economy, provides jobs and creates additional tax revenue.

The short answer then, is that you cannot buy weed online in Chicago unless you have a medical marijuana card. As of the 1st January 2020, you should be able to order weed online, since numerous businesses are poised and ready to meet the anticipated market demand.

How Soon Can I Order Cannabis in Chicago?

You should check with your local dispensary to find out. It may be that the dispensaries are already taking reservations. If this is the case, it is highly recommended that you take advantage of this opportunity. It is expected that there will be long queues, stock sell-outs and lack of choices to contend with when that day comes.

This isn't speculation either, there is a precedent. When weed was first legalized in Canada back in 2018 it just took two days for their stock to run low. After Nevada legalized weed it had run out in just a week. In this instance, buying cannabis online in Chicago may be your best option.

The New Laws on Ordering Cannabis (Online or Otherwise)

So, we have established that the regulations are changing in January and that you can subsequently start buying weed online in Chicago. But how will the law actually affect us? Well you won't be able to smoke in public places and recreational use will be confined to indoors, and home use. Although existing dispensaries will be the only place you can buy weed in Chicago until the first of May 2020; new permits will then be issued for other places to legally sell recreational marijuana.

When the law comes into effect, those who are in jail serving a sentence for possession of less than thirty grams of marijuana will be able to apply to have their case reviewed. You also won't be able to grow cannabis plants unless you have a valid medical marijuana card. These users are further limited to only 5 plants for personal use, per individual.

It will be legal to carry up to 30 grams of marijuana flower or up to500mg of THC contained in edibles for personal use. You must be over the age of 21 to be legally allowed to order marijuana online – or anywhere else. If you want to read the full implications or watch the news clip of the announcement, you can visit ABC7.

Buying Recreational Weed Will Be Big Business for Chicago

Whatever happens with regards to the ability to order cannabis online; Chicago is going to have a huge economic boost from the legalization process. A terrific example of this is the economic boost Colorado saw after legalization. They applied a 15% excise tax on the growers, then added a 15% sales tax on the dispensaries. As a state, Colorado went on to receive $1.4bn in taxes from cannabis sales. During the same year they only made $45 million from alcohol taxes.

Applied to Chicago, this could mean extra revenue that goes towards schools, council buildings, libraries and public spaces. Although weed might be scarce immediately after legalization, weed delivery services are going to flourish – and particularly those situated in the suburbs or immediately outside of the city.

 How much will it cost?

Products will also be subject to a 3 percent tax in the city of Chicago and a state tax that varies depending on the level of THC in the product. Tetrahydrocannabinol is marijuana's psychoactive component. If a product has a concentration of less than 35 percent THC, it will face a 10 percent tax. Cannabis-infused products with more than 35 percent THC will have a 20 percent tax, and marijuana with more than a 35 percent THC concentration will have a 25 percent tax.

 How much can you have?

Illinois residents can have up to 30 grams of cannabis flower, 5 grams of concentrate and no more than 30 milligrams of THC in a cannabis-infused product.

Medical patients can have more under certain conditions and can grow up to five plants in their home.

Non-Illinois residents, including tourists, can have 15 grams of cannabis flower, 2.5 grams of concentrate and no more than 250 milligrams of THC in an infused product.

 Where can you use it?

Not in public places. State law bans consumption anywhere you can be observed by others in public and near other smoke-free spots. There aren’t current plans for on-site consumption in cafes or bars in Chicago, either.

People are prohibited from having an open container of cannabis in a vehicle, including passengers. Chicago police officers are being trained on new policy.

Unlawful possession—including consuming in a prohibited place or having more than is legally allowed—will garner a $50 fine for the first offense and $100 for those that happen within 30 days after that.
